Biography

Claire was born in 1916. She was the daughter of Palmer Goplen and Nannie Durbin. Her "Elementary Limited" teaching credentials were recorded in Cass County on June 1, 1935.

She passed away in 2001.[1]

Claire F. Esler, 85, of Hibbing, formerly of Cherry, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Leisure Hills of Hibbing. She was born on June 2, 1916, to Alvin and Nanny (Durbin) Goplen in May Township, Minn.

She grew up and attended school in Motley, Minn., graduating as Valedictorian in 1934. After graduation, she earned a teaching certificate in Staples, Minn. She taught in one-room school houses for seven years. She was united in marriage to Myrton Esler on Nov. 30, 1940, in Brainerd. Following marriage, the couple made their home in Motley where she worked on the family farm and raised their children. The couple then moved to Cherry. She worked for Cluett and Peabody at the Arrow Shirt Factory in Eveleth for 22 years before retiring to Cherry for 15 years. She was an avid gardener and reader and enjoyed the outdoors. The family would especially like to thank Carol Kiel and the staff at Leisure Hills for their loving care.

She is survived by two daughters, Judith Paurus of Brooklyn Center, Minn., and Nancy (Gary) Wiinanen of Chisholm; a son, Lawrence Esler of Sedona, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Cari (Todd) Smiley of Albertville, Minn., Lauren Paurus of Brooklyn Center, Minn., Melinda Salin of Baltimore, Md., Corrine Salin of Baltimore, Kirstie Esler of Sedona, and Charles Paurus of Minneapolis; two great-grandchildren, Madison and Carter Smiley; a sister, Hazel Nelson of Motley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husband Myrton in 1991; daughter, Ardith Esler; a son Russell; brother, Alvin Goplen; and her parents.
