Biography

George was born in September, 1748[1]. He is the son of Benjamin Gorton and Mercy Foster. He married Lydia Aylesworth in 1769.

According to Gorton's book, George and Lydia moved from Coventry, Rhode Island (which was formed from a part of Warwick, Rhode Island) in 1803 to Otsego, New York. It seems they had lived in Coventry for many years, since they appear in Coventry in the 1774 Census of Rhode Island.

Research

George appears as head of household in the 1774 census of Rhode Island[2]. His household distribution and inferred attributions are

  • one white male over 16: George
  • two white males under 16: Daniel and perhaps Jared
  • one white female over 16: Lydia
  • two white females under 16: Ruth and unknown

Gorton's book lists four sons, two born after the census. Son Jared's birth date is unknown, but unless evidence appears of an additional son we infer that the second male child is him. Gorton lists three girl children besides Ruth without birth dates -- Sarah, Mercy and Susan. Presumably one of them is the second daughter.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:
