Biography

BENJAMIN GOULD,[1] born at Chelmsford, 29 Aug 1742 son of Adam Gould and Elizabeth Butterfield;[2] Benjamin died at Plymouth, New Hampshire, 5 Jan 1804;[3] m. about 1768, SARAH HARVELL,[4] born 1745 who has not been further identified but perhaps the sister of James Harvell (son of John Harvell and Esther Proctor) who settled in Plymouth in 1767;[5] Sarah died at Plymouth, 25 Feb 1804.[6]

Benjamin and his brother Abijah were briefly in New Ipswich, New Hampshire as young men, with their father Adam there with them.[7] Brother Abijah moved on to Temple, New Hampshire, Benjamin to Pembroke and then, Plymouth, and father Adam remaining in New Ipswich until about 1790 when he went to Plymouth.

On 28 October 1767, Benjamin Gould yeoman was of Pembroke when he purchased a 50-acre lot, being upland lot number 32, and a 16-acre lot in Plymouth from Benjamin Hoit for payment of £26.8.[8]

Benjamin was active in church and town affairs in Plymouth. He served as selectman and was town representative in 1791 and 1793. He served as deacon of the Congregational church.[9]

Benjamin was commissioned as Ensign in the 11th Regiment on 24 January 1774 and Lieutenant on 16 August 1774. The Provincial Congress commissioned him as Lieutenant on 5 September 1775. After the Revolution, Benjamin served as Captain of the militia and was promoted to Major of the 14th Regiment on 7 July 1786. He resigned his commission on 17 June 1790.[10]

In 1790, the household of Benjamin Gould was seven persons at Plymouth, New Hampshire: three males 16 and over and four females.[11] The household was also seven persons in 1800: one male 45 and over, one female 45 and over, three males 16 to 25, one female 10 to 15, and one female 16 to 25.[12]

On 25 March 1796, Benjamin Goold, Esq. of Plymouth, in consideration of love, goodwill, and natural affection, conveyed to his son John Goold yeoman of Plymouth a 30-acre tract of upland in Plymouth.[13]

On 31 January 1804, Esther Gould of Plymouth, New Hampshire, for payment of $136, quitclaimed to her brother Benjamin Gould of Danville, Vermont her interest in the estate of honored father Benjamin Gould late of Plymouth. On the same date, John Goold of Plymouth, for payment of $500, quitclaimed his interest in the estate to his brother Benjamin. Also on 31 January 1804, John made a separate sale of property originally from the estate of father Benjamin to brother Benjamin for payment of $150.[14]

Benjamin and Sarah were parents of seven children born at Plymouth, New Hampshire.

iv WILLIAM GOULD, b. 16 Oct 1778; d. by drowning, 24 Apr 1789.

v ESTHER GOULD, b. 10 Feb 1781; d. at Plymouth, 21 Jul 1853; m. at Plymouth, 12 Dec 1805, AMOS WEBSTER, b. 27 Jan 1777 son of Stephen and Hannah (Dolbeer) Webster; Amos d. 23 Nov 1866.
