Biography

Edward Goulstone was born in 1903 in Whakatane, the son of Newton Goulstone and Elizabeth Gordon.

In 1920 he passed electrical engineering examinations run by London City and Guilds. He had studied for these exams at home through Bower's Engineering School (Colwill's Chambers in Swanson St, Auckland).[1]

One May day in 1926 was a heavy day for Magistrate S M Hunt as a long parade of motorists were convicted and fined for dangerous driving, all "motorists travelling at speeds between 30 and 50 miles per hour." Edward Goulstone was one of them. He had to pay £3 + costs. (Auckland Star, Volume LVII, Issue 123, 26 May 1926, Page 9) [2]

In September 1927, Ed went by ship (over on the Hinemoa, back on the Himalaya) from Auckland to Norfolk Island for a holiday.

Ed met Annie Hunt in Rongotea while on a mission trip - the Bible Carriage - with the Brethren Assemblies. They married on Annie's 27th birthday in Rongotea, Annie's home town. Their first home was at 25 Oxton Rd, Mt Albert.

At the time of Allan's birth in 1932, Edward was working as a mechanic and the family were living at 2[3] Portage Road, Ōtāhuhu.

In 1933 he was speaker at the Mangere East Public Hall on a Sunday evening at 7. "Hearty invitation to all." (New Zealand Herald, Volume LXX, Issue 21402, 28 January 1933, Page 16)[4]

Margaret was born in 1936. At this time they were living in Rockfield Rd, Oranga, but by late 1937, the Goulstones had moved into a new home at 9 Newhaven Street, Ellerslie. Allan started school at Cornwall Park School at the beginning of 1938.

Ed and his younger brother, Roy, set up in business as "Goulstone Brothers Ltd." repairing and selling motor vehicles from premises on Great South Road, Penrose. The company was registered in 1938, though Ed and Roy had been working together for a good five years at that point. Goulstone Bros stayed on the register until 1990: Ed had long since passed away and his nephew Keith had taken over the business.

After a number of years with angina, Ed died of a heart attack on 21 Dec 1967 in hospital in Auckland.

Obituary

"Mr Edward Allan Goulstone of Auckland died suddenly on 21 December, aged 64. Our brother was saved in early life and received into assembly fellowship in Onehunga. He served on the Bible Carriage, and was often present at early Browns Bay Camps. He was an early member of the Ellerslie Assembly, and until the time of his Homecall was a faithful elder. Many have been blessed by the hospitality in his home, and by his faithful visiting of the sick and aged. Latterly, he had taken a very active part in the Bible-in-Schools movement in many schools, as well as serving as a member of the Auckland Committe of the Council for Christian Education. Survived by his wife, son and daughter, all the Lord's." (The source for this is uncertain. It was kept in Annie's birthday book for many years. The publication will have been a Brethren Assembly newsletter in New Zealand.)

He was buried at Mangare Lawn Cemetery, Auckland. Annie lived as his widow for 36 years until shortly after her 100th birthday. She died in 2003 and was buriled with Edward.
