Helen was born in 1872. [1] She died in 1948.
Helen's birthplace is given as Upham's Corner, Dorchester, Suffolk Co., MA, in our family records, and her original birth record says she was born on Glendale Street in Boston. However, George Edward Tolman's death certificate gives her birthplace as Malden. Her name was changed to Helen Washburn after her parents' divorce. She went to the N. E. Home for Little Wanderers. Upon being adopted by John and May Doughty her name was changed to Gertrude Marie Doughty, later Gertrude Marie Tolman when she married. She lived in Malden, MA. Her profession when she married is listed as "operative". She eventually found her natural mother and stayed in touch with her.
1930 Census: Gertrude Tolman, a 50-year-old [!] widow, lived on Washington St. in Auburn. She identifies herself and her parents as having been b. ME, but this is inconsistent with other data.
