Carlos was born in 1902. He passed away in 1994. Gracie is notable as a student of Meada Mistuyo (1878-1941), himself a student of the founder of Judo, Jigoro Kano, and a Japanese immigrant to Brazil. Maeda taught Gracie a style of Kodokan Judo combined with catch-wrestling and other martial arts. Carlos started his own martial arts academy in 1925. Gracie and his family developed Maeda's style of grappling into the modern martial art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
