Biography

John Grant, son of Allan Grant and May MacBain, was born in about 1785 in Morayshire, Scotland, most likely in Parish of Cromdale, Inverallan, and Advie.[1][2][3][4][5]

John married Katherine McDonald on February 24, 1825 in Parish of Cromdale and Inverallan, Moray, Scotland.[1][2][3][6] John was a tenant farmer of Knockanbuie of Tulchan near Advie (GPS coordinates: 57.398067, -3.470467) and Katherine was a resident of "Culdroyn" at the time, which was also known as Culdrein, and was the farm located immediately north of Knockanbuie.[6] His father, Allan, died later that year.[5] The next year, John and Katherine had their first child, a son named John.[1][2]

John and Katherine had several children:

As of 1851, John was still a tenant at Knockanbuie, farming 24 acres.[3] He was living with his wife, his daughter, Marjory, and a lodger, William Haldane, a carpenter from England.[3]

John moved to New Elgin in Parish of Elgin.[4] He died at the age of 69 years at 5 p.m. on November 15, 1856 in New Elgin.[4][5] The cause of death was recorded as hydrocephalus senilis.[4] John was buried in Advie Cemetery (cemetery GPS: 57.399817, -3.429735) with his parents.[5]

Research Notes

Parents: John's parents are not listed on his death record as a neighbour was the informant and he mistakenly provided John's wife's information in place of his mother's and failed to provide the father's information.[4] A cemetery survey for Advie Cemetery includes the full monumental inscription for John's gravestone, which includes his parents.[5] A birth record was not found on the ScotlandsPeople website with these parents though.

Death: The monumental inscription from the Advie Cemetery Survey suggests a death date of November 6, 1856, which is more than one week earlier than his death date on the death register, so this is probably an error.[5]

A Find A Grave memorial page exists for his burial, but lacks a photograph or other sources as of 2021: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/181162690/john-grant
