Biography
Helen Barbara Grant-Allen passed away suddenly and peacefully at home on Wednesday, November 1, 2017. She had a wonderful life and has touched so many of us. Barbara had an amazing gift of making everyone feel special.[1]
Born in 1931 to Helen and Murray Grant in Halifax, Nova Scotia, she spent most of her years living in the Dartmouth, Nova Scotia area and the last 25 years in Ottawa, Ontario to be near her three children and their spouses – Stephen Graham, Angela Stoker (Stan), Sandra O’Brien (Joe) and her four grandchildren Craig Carter, Neil Carter, Vickie MacLean (Graeme Vlasic) and Jamie MacLean (Sarah) and five great-grandchildren, Andrew Carter, Alexis Carter, Mason Carter, Jack Carter and Justice MacLean.
We were all blessed with her great sense of humour and fun spirit. She adored her brother Ken Grant (Lorraine) in Niagara Falls Ontario and share great memories with her sister-in-law Phyllis Grant in Ottawa. In everyday life, Barbara enjoyed traveling, playing cards and the company of friends and family. She was an insatiable shopper and revelled in celebrations and experiencing new places and new things. Barbara has played so many important roles throughout her full and happy life – daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother, cook, homemaker, travel consultant, fashion consultant, advisor and family matriarch.
For most, Barbara will be remembered for her good heart, engaging personality, boisterous laughter and her
passion for her children and life. She was our strength, light and inspiration. She will be deeply missed.
There will be a memorial/celebration of life on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home.
