Biography

This profile is part of the Graves Name Study.

John Herndon Graves was born 1746 or 1749 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, to John Graves and Isabella Lea. [Earlier researchers had thought he was by an earlier marriage to a Catherine (Herndon) Graves (1716-1750), but that has been disproven by a bible entry made by his nephew Solomon, son of brother Barzillia. See father’s profile.]

A captain in the Revolutionary War, he was assigned to duty under Maj. Gen. Nathanael Greene. Badly wounded in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, 15 March 1781, he was left wounded on the field for dead. A fellow soldier heard him moan and placed him on a horse, then took him to Yanceyville. The British Gen. Cornwallis suffered significant losses and found it necessary to leave North Carolina for Virginia. There, he fought and lost the Battle of Yorktown; then surrendered to Gen. Washington.

He married:

  1. Ann Slade, daughter of Thomas Slade and Hannah Miles Slade. They married 5 Feb 1770. She died 4 June 1807 at Yanceyville. They had ten children who lived to adulthood.
  2. Elizabeth Burton, on 28 November 1807, the Widow Coleman. They had no children.

He died October 28, 1829 in Caswell County, North Carolina.

He purportedly was a grandson (sixth great grandson) of Captain Thomas Graves, who was one of the original stockholders in the Virginia Company and, in 1608, was one of the settlers of Jamestown, Virginia[1]. This has been disproven by DNA research. Capt. Thomas Graves of Jamestown is Gen. 169. John Herndon Graves belongs to Gen. 270. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
