Alexander Francis[1] Green (also Greene[1]) was born about 1819[1]-1822[2] in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[3][4] He served with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War.
He stood about 5 foot 4 inches (1.63m) tall with hazel eyes, black hair and a dark complexion when he enlisted.[3][4]

The "Record of Death and Interment" in his Compiled Military Service Record lists under "References and Remarks:" "Brother John G. Green, North East corner of Race and 10th St., Philadelphia, Penn."[3]
Private Alexander Green died of disease during the United States Civil War.
During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company D of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. Enlisted from Philadelphia, PA on 11 December 1863. He was about 41 years old, single and working as a barber when he enlisted on 11 December 1863 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died of disease (diarrhea) on 19 March 1864 at the General Hospital in Beaufort, South Carolina. He is buried in Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina.[2]
