Biography

Thomas was born in 1754. He was the son of Philip Greenwell and his first wife, Mary (UMN).[1] He passed away in 1812. In 1797, when he would have been over age 21, he married Mary Abell in St Mary's County, Maryland.[2]

The 1810 Census indicates that Thomas and his family were in St Mary's County with the following household enumerated.[3] (Presumed to be "this" Thomas due to ages of children.)

White Males: (1) born 1801-1810; (1) born 1795-1800; (1) born before 1765
White Females: (1) born 1801-1810; (1) born 1785-1794; (1) born 1766-1784; (1) born before 1765

Research Notes

This is NOT the Thomas J Greenwell who passed away in November 1826 and is buried at Saint John Francis Regis Cemetery in St Mary's County, Maryland. (FindAGrave Memorial 22195931)

Looks like we have a match. I'll go ahead and approve the merge. Do you want to manage? I'm not at all related.

Here’s his will, but I don’t have time to read it right now. It should at least name children, which will help verify if we’re talking about the same person or not. I will dig into it tomorrow, if you haven’t already done so.

It’s definitely a possibility, but more information is needed before merging, IMO. Is there a Probate record for Thomas? If so, that would help. In the meantime, I’ll mark this as unmatched, pending investigation. (And yes, they would have used her CLN—I.e, married name on a subsequent marriage.)

Greenwell-1040 and Greenwell-985 appear to represent the same person because: This was an adopted profile, but after looking at one of the sources (https://www.colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I65793&tree=Tree1) was wondering if his 2nd wife, Mary Abell's wife's maiden name might be Simmons (He was married to an Eleanor Abell before that)? It has the 1797 marriage date, Mary was married to a Cuthbert Abell before she married Thomas, I don't know if they would use her married name in the registry for the new marriage.
Greenwell-1040 and Greenwell-985 are not ready to be merged because: Further investigation needed. There were several men with this name in the same area in the given timeframe.

Greenwell-1040 and Greenwell-985 appear to represent the same person because: Research shows same person. DOB needs to be 1754. Probate sources need to be added.
