. Shows he was born 1793: John Greer lived in Bath County, Virginia, prior to 1808, on the banks of the Bull Pasture River. Here was born his family of five children, William, born in 1793, Margaret in 1794, Jane in 1800, John in 1803 and James in 1805.

John House was a man who loved to walk all over the county - several counties actually, but he lived in Jackson County at one time. He would stop and talk to anyone who would talk to him, giving him info on their families. There are mistakes, he wasn’t perfect, and his notes have been transcribed and then I retyped them from a copy made on a dot matrix printer. It’s possible Mr House misread the stone - it’s hard to tell what the stone looked like but it’s not hard for an 8 to degrade to look like a 3.

"The cemetery reading was done by a member of the genealogy society, and it’s possible they made a mistake. 3 and 8 can be confused if the stone. Is old and has degraded. Their reading was probably done in the 1960s to 1990s. A long time after 1837!"

I suspect the tombstone is accurate - it has almost full dates and if someone paid for a stone in 1837, it was likely it was his family and they should have known. House got his info much later, probably more like 1880 - and I would question why the children were born with so many years apart. But I’ll let you make your best guess - add this info to the notes for William and maybe down the road some other source will come to light and we can pull out more hair. ..Good luck! Betty

He served at the Battle of Point Pleasant and later at the Battle of Kings Mountain (SC). Later, ca. 1807 he moved his family from Augusta/Bath County, VA, to Point Pleasant, Mason County. At the time there was an outbreak of “fever” and he moved his family to higher ground to Three Mile Creek which is now on Greer Road, Flat Rock, Cooper District. The oldest Greer Cemetery of the family is on this road opposite where the house sat. The Greer Reunion is held on Greer Road each year on the day before Labor Day.
