Mary Gregg,[1][2][3][4] the daughter of John Gregg and his wife, Elizabeth Boothe, was also known as Polly.[4] She was born on 3 Jul 1802 in Randolph County, North Carolina.[1][3][4] She moved with her parents to Ross County, Ohio about 1802, where she grew to maturity.[5] She was a beneficiary named in the will of her uncle, Amos Gregg, who died in 1817.[2]
She married William Long on 3 Jul 1820 in Ross County, Ohio.[2][4][6] They had the following children:
The family moved to Van Buren County, Missouri about 1840, along with her parents and several of her brothers. They lived in Van Buren when its name was changed to Cass County, and continued their residency there until 1853, when they moved by overland stage to Sonoma County, California, where the couple spent the remainder of their lives.
On the census taken 15 Aug 1850, she and her family appeared in Cass County, Missouri, as: William Long, age 56, male, farmer, real estate valuation $1,400, born in Maryland; Mary Long, age 48, female, born North Carolina; William Long, age 17, male farmer, born in Ohio; Mary Long, age 14, female, born in Ohio; John Long, age 7, male, born in Missouri; Hannah J. On the census taken 8 Jun 1870, she appeared with a P. O. address of Clareville, California, in Sonoma County. Her grandson, Perry Strech was living with them, no doubt to help her husband with the farm work. By 1880, her husband had died, and Mary had moved in with her son-in-law and daughter, John H. Rice and wife Mary A. On the census taken 7 Jun 1880, the family was reported as John H. She died on 4 Sep 1887 in California at age 85, and is buried in Hall Cemetery, Healdsburg, Sonoma County, California.[10]
The 1880 census gives her name as Mary A. Long. If this is correct, she probably did not have a sister Mary Ann, but her sister was named just Anna.
