Biography

Elizabeth Gribble

Vivian Gribble claimed she was born on the Mermaid en-route to Port Phillip as does the Shine Chart, [1] however the English Indexes reveal she was born in Cornwall on 6 September 1852. [2]

Examination of the Victorian Unassisted Immigration Shipping Records indicates that Ann Gribble, aged 24, and Eliza, aged 1, arrived on the Mermaid in July 1954. [3] There is no chance of confusion as their ages closely match the birth dates of Ann and Elizabeth Gribble of Camborne.[4]

Elizabeth was born about four months before Charles sailed for Australia so would have been about 1 year and 9 months old when she arrived in Australia. The uncertainty surrounding her date of birth is not surprising given the various dates offered by different sources. For example her age does not match other details on the death certificates of Charles and Ann. [5]

l February 1887: Charles died aged 66 years after 35 years in Victoria, and had been married at 30 years of age: supposedly when Elizabeth was 34 years of age. [6]

l 8 September 1927: Ann died aged 97 years after 71 years in Victoria and had been married at 22 years: supposedly when Elizabeth was 75 years of age. [7]

She spent her very early years playing alongside the Lerderderg River at Frenchman’s Point where she would have witnessed the construction of the Tunnel. When she was about 6 years of age the family moved to Simmon’s Reef. [8]

She resided there until her marriage on 3 September 1869 at 17 years of age. [9]

Her husband was Phillip Mynard [Maynard] Broad whose parents came from Devon. I assume that he was born in that county because no birth is recorded for him in Victoria [10]whilst a Phillip Broad arrived as a 13 year old with his parents on the Conway. [11]

Phillip was the brother of William Davis Broad who married Elizabeth's sister Julia Gribble. The brothers Broad came from a Clunes family parented by William Broad and Sarah Davis[12]

Doris Nisbett suggests that there were actually four Broad brothers in Blackwood: Phillip, William, Joseph and Henry Davis who all came from the same Clunes family.

Phillip married Elizabeth Gribble [8 children][13] ;

William married Julia Gribble [8 children][14]

Joseph married Mary Jane Armstrong [15][children unknown] and

Henry Davis married Emily Skinner who was the sister of Joe Skinner the husband of Julia [Totsy] Gribble, [16]who was a daughter of Henry and Julia Gribble [17] - so the Gribbles, Broads and Skinners have strong links.

The 1903 Electoral Roll records Phillip as a storekeeper at Barrys Reef; work that was commensurate with his reading and writing skills. Elizabeth had home duties, with Christine Jane and Emily both living at home with home duties and occupied with household work.[18]

The 1908 Electoral Roll records Phillip Broad still as a storekeeper, Elizabeth still with home duties and Christina Jane also with home duties despite having married Alfred Llewelyn. The family still lived at Barry’s Reef. The date of Elizabeth’s death is unknown but Phillip died on 10 January 1913.[19]
