Biography

Jacob Grimes (Greim) was born August 1, 1779 in Guilford County, North Carolina to parents Margaretha and Johann Sebatian Greim . [1]
NOTE: I think new information will arise as Jacob's place of birth may have been skewed by a basic (but somewhat confusing / obscure) error made by referencing the 1790 Census. Jacob Grimes was listed as Head of Household in the 1790 Census from the Salisbury District of Guilford County, North Carolina. (As a North Carolina native/ resident and a genealogist, I can easily understand why one would instantly think Rowan County when seeing "Salisbury, North Carolina" because Salisbury originated in Rowan County, North Carolina and still remains today.) However in 1766 six colonial districts were created by Governor Tryon for handling judicial matters. Before the American Revolution (1755) the Governor renamed them "Military districts" using the areas as stations for organizing the various militias. NOTE: County lines were not changed by these districts, but the districts themselves were constantly evolving; at times even crossing in to South Carolina and Tennessee. My guess is the Census used this nomenclature because it was a Federal decision unrelated to Colonial government / policy.
"...1775, these six regions were renamed "Military districts" by the North Carolina Provincial Congress and used for organizing the North Carolina militia. The other districts were Edenton, Halifax, Hillsborough, New Bern, and Wilmington districts..."[2]
I need to review NC Census history from 1800 - 1830 to confirm the nomenclature but the six referenced districts were officially resolved in 1835. Becky Elizabeth
Jacob married Elizabeth Tatum around 1803 (estimated from Census data and birth of first child). Together they may have had at least ten children:
  1. Emma / Anna (?) - (1804-1866)
  2. Obediah - (1806-1897)
  3. John Harvey - (1809- 1892)
  4. Rebecca Nancy - (1813-1890)
  5. Elizabeth Ann -
  6. Simeon - (1814 -1865)
  7. Washington - (1815- ?)
  8. Wallace - (1820 - ?)
  9. Mathias Alexander - (1821 -1854)
  10. Leitha - (1826 -1869)
Jacob and his family were living in Adair County, Kentucky in 1827. He may have been motivated by the 1815 Act allowing all vacant lands to be sold for 20 cents an acre as long as the buyer could prove state residency for a full year prior. Jacob received land grants totaling 200 acres in 1827 and by 1832 he owned 500 acres (KY land warrants 150a Book W pg. 267 and 50a pg, 268)
In 1829, Jacob Greim / Grimes was appointed land surveyor (Book E pg 218) and "Road VIewer" in 1832. Any lands he may have still owned in Tennessee remain inconclusive as all courthouse documents prior to 1900 were destroyed by fire.
Jacob Grimes passed away August 4th, 1862 in Cookeville, Putnam County, Tennessee (Citation Needed) and was buried in the town of Bloomington at Alex Byers Cemetery. [3]

Prior Notes

  • I found the profile "orphaned" but the following note was all that was written under the Biography heading and I am guessing the author might have been in a rush and mistakenly written the incorrect date thusly coming to the false "conclusion":
"Note: Jacob's birthday is listed as 1879, but he is head of household in 1790 Rowan County Census. This is confirmed by JH Grime memoirs. Therefore, the birthdate is incorrect."
  • I revised and looked at ALL changes made to this profile by numerous persons and it seems in the beginning when removing person's name (I made sure to place her in the Acknowledgments) an inline citation was also deleted by an editing member: (NC 1790 Census Head of Family Salisbury district, Guildford, NC) but there was no accompanying source / citation aside from a personal Ancestry tree. UPDATE: I have attempted to explain the Census in Bio but still need to actual document.

If ANYONE

has a tree on Ancestry including Jacob Grimes / Greim and can access the total data for making a citation, please post here or in the comments and I will create one so we can confirm him in the 1790 Federal Census of Salisbury District, Guilford County, North Carolina.

My grandfather was Raymond McCoy Grimes, Sr., from Thomasville, NC (Davidson County). It is possible that Jacob Greim/Grimes was one of his relatives, although probably not a direct ancestor because my Grimes ancestors stayed in the piedmont region of North Carolina and did not move to Tennessee.

Please see the added notes I placed when I adopted the profile and looked in to this ancestors sourcing...it places them in North Carolina longer etc ..

Cheers! Becky Elizabeth

  • Any added data or helpful sites and sources are appreciated as I haven't had a lot of time to work on this line recently.

I had Elizabeth Tatum (10 Oct 1783) married to Jacob Grimes. Was his original given name at birth John Greim ?. Does anyone know if they are one of the same? Is there a record that officially changed his name? I would really appreciate clarification. Thanks.

I recntly adopted this profile and found some new sourcing but would appreciate anything you may still have so we can possibly compare notes and work on this line. I didn't read the comments initially but now that I have, Tatum sounds very familiar and even though I haven't checked these notes I wanted to reply with the hopes that too much tike hadn't elapsed.

Cheers! Becky Elizabeth
