Romeo Grimes is a part of US Black heritage.

Romeo Grimes was born about 1829 in North Carolina. He served with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War.

Military Service

During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company G of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 34 years old, married and working as a laborer when he enlisted from Newberne [sic] (probably New Bern), North Carolina on 17 August 1863. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.[1]
