Biography

Joseph Groves was born in 1889 in Blackheath, Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, England to Thomas Groves and Hannah (Cashmore) Groves. His birth was registered in Dudley, Staffordshire in the third quarter of the year (as Joseph Grove), with mother's maiden name Cashmore.[1]

Joseph Grove, son of Thomas & Hannah, was christened on 5 Aug 1889 in Blackheath.[2]

In 1891 Joseph Groves (age 1) lived at Halesowen Street in [Rowley Regis] with his father Thomas (42, Rivet Maker), mother Hannah (42, Nailer), and four siblings: Rosannah (14), William (12, Scholar), Thomas (8, Scholar), and John (6, Scholar).[3]

In 1901 Joseph Groves (age 11) lived at Payne Street in Rowley Regis with his father Thomas (52, Rivet Manufacturer), mother Hannah (51), and four siblings: William (22, Rivet Maker), Thomas (18, Rivet Maker), John (16, Gas & Water Fittings Screwer), and Minnie (8).[4]

In 1911 Joseph Groves (age 21, Tool Maker & Fitter at Bolts Works) lived in Rowley Regis with his father Thomas (62, Bolt Rivet Frost Load Manf), mother Hannah (61), and sister Minnie (18).[5]

Joseph Groves (age 23, Bachelor, Tool Maker, residing at Payne Street Blackheath, son of Thomas Groves, Rivet Manufacturer) and Hannah Hackett (age 23, Spinster, Screwer, residing at Payne Street Blackheath, daughter of Shadrack Hackett, deceased, Quarryman) were married on 26 Oct 1912 at St Paul's in Blackheath - the witnesses were Frederick Hackett & Eliza Cashmore.[6] The marriage was registered in Stourbridge, Worcestershire in the last quarter of the year.[7]

Joseph and Hannah had two daughters:

  1. Trissie Groves (1918-)
  2. Marian Groves (1921-)

Joseph and his family emigrated to Ontario, Canada in 1923.
