Biography

The only source regarding him is Irene's papers, which say, "Jakob Grunwald was the father of Pinehas Grunwald. He had other children. Some of their descendents immigrated to the United States. Of those who remained in Hungary, some survived the Holocaust. Some have immigrated to Israel."

Given that his son Pinehas was born in 1808, I infer Jakob was born before 1790.

His great-grandson, born 1853, may be named after him.

Other children? Eszter Grunvald Zalzman born about 1822 in Felsőkércs (Fulokercs?) could be related. She is in Faj in the 1848 census, while Pinchas is there in 1857.

Josef Grunvald appears in the 1857 census in Fulokercs, could be related.

Abraham Grunvald appears in the 1857 census in Fulokercs, could be related.

Searching JewishGen for Grunvald and town Gagybator or Bator does not yield anyone born about the same time as Josef.

Research Notes

1848 census - him?

I do not find any records on JewishGen that clearly match him. There are three households in the 1848 census which might be connected to him:

In Tornyosnémeti there is a widow of a Jakab Grunvald, born about 1893 in "Kércs, Abaúj-Torna". (Is that Fulokercs? There is also a Nyirkercs, but that was in Szabolcs county. On mapire, Nyirkercs is named just Kercs. I understand it also bore the name Felsokercs.). She has a ten-year-old son Lazar Grunvald, born in Tornyosnémeti. There is a Geni profile of this family, though it seems largely speculative.

In the adjacent town Miglecz there is a second widow of a Jakab Grunvald, born about 1788 in Kenyhecz. She has a fifteen-year-old daughter Rezi born in Miglecz.

In Fulókércs there is a Jakab Grinvald, beggar, born about 1777 in Miglécz, Abaúj-Torna. Wife's name is Rozalia. My Grunwald family also lived in Fulokercs, but I do not see why a landowner's father would be a beggar. (In this census, what does occupation beggar really mean?)

If either of the widows of Jakab Grunvald is a widow of our Jakab Grunvald, then our Grunwald family is likely related to some of the Grunwalds that appear in the towns Tornyosnémeti, Miglécz or Kenyhecz. (Those three towns are directly adjacent.)

1848 census - his children?

His son Pinchas appears in the 1848 census in Büttös under the name Josef Grunvald. He is an innkeeper, born about 1808 in Bátor, Abaúj-Torna. (I believe this is Gagybátor.) His wife, Anna Klein, was born about 1810 in Vatta, Borsod. Their three eldest children were born in Felsőkércs, Abaúj-Torna. (I believe it is actually Fulokercs.)

Perhaps siblings of Pinchas/Josef were also born in Bátor/Gagybátor, but I do not find any records when searching surname Grunvald and town Bator of Gagybator. (Searching for town Bator and any field containing Torna does not return any results in the 1848 census. It should find Pinchas' household???) There are some Grunwalds in the 1857 census, described below, which could be Pinchas' siblings, but that census does not state birth places. There are also some Grunwalds in the 1848 census who were not born in Bator but could plausibly be Pinchas' siblings, Jakab's children"

In Fáj is Eszter Grunvald, wife of Jakab Zalzman. She was born about 1822 in "Felsőkércs", which is probably Fulokercs. (Pinchas appears in Faj in 1857, and he had children born in Fulokercs.)

There are several Grunwald's born in Tornyosnémeti who may be children of the aforementioned widow of Jakab Grunvald in that town: Lazar age 10 is living with her. Izsak age 24 is living and born in that town. Klari Grunvald Engel age 24 is born and living in that town. These Grunwalds are recorded on Familysearch and on Geni.

There are also some Grunvalds born in Miglécz and Kenyhecz.

1857 census Which Grünvald/Grünwalds in the 1857 census, in Abauj-Torna county, seem that they could be children of Jakob? (I've searched surname phonetically like Grinwald, and any field contains Torna. Grinwald capture the mistranscribed record of Wolf along with Grünvald and Grünwald.)

Jakob's son Pinchas appears under the name Josef Grünvald in Faj along with his wife and five children. His occupation is land owner.

Two miles to the northeast, in Fulokercs, are two more Grünvald land owner households, of Abraham and Josef. They are plausibly brothers of Pinchas. Where are this Abraham and Josef in the 1848 census???

Josef's son Wolf appears 12 miles to the northwest in Bodolo, along with Wolf's wife and three eldest children. Wolf's occupation is tradesman.

One mile further north of Bodolo tradesman Herman Grünvald, born 1821, appears in Szepsi along with his wife Rebeka born 1823. They do not have children in this record. Herman could plausibly be a younger brother of Pinchas.

Six miles southeast of Faj, in Felsőméra (now Méra), Abraham Grünwald, born 1807, day laborer, with his wife but no children.

Also in Felsőméra, Moses Klein, born 1840, son of Hani Grünwald, born in "Muzek Rakany" (I think Rakany should be Radvány, but I don't know about Muzek.)

Twelve miles northeasst of Faj, in Miglecz (now Milhost), Filip Grünwald appears with his wife, two children, and, I think, his mother Maria. Maria is a widow, and day laborer. Filip is also a day laborer. This family is probably related to those found one mile southeast in Tornyosnémeti in the 1848 census.

Two miles northeast of Miglecz, in Nadasd (now Trstené pri Hornáde), two children of a Barbara Grünvald.

Further away: Michael Grünwald's household in Kassabela; Lajbko Grünwald's in Also-Csaj (now Nižný Čaj, which has Hungarian name Alsócsáj); Mendel Grünwald's in Rank (now Rankovce, Hungarian name Ránk), he is a landowner; Bernath Grünvald in Josvafo, day laborer, born 1819, with wife and children; Ignatz Grünwald in Szin, house owner, born 1821, with wife and three daughters;

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jakob by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jakob:
