Obituary

Wm. Guthmann Passes Away Suddenly

Death came suddenly to Wm. Guthmann early Tuesday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Victor Andersen in Plainview, bringing sadness to this community at the Christmas season.

William Oswald Guthmann was born March 23, 1875 at Plattsmouth, Nebraska, and passed away at his home in Plainview, Nebr., Tuesday morning, December 21, 1948, at the age of 73 years, 8 months, and 28 days.

His boyhood was spent at Plattsmouth, where he grew to manhood, the older son in a family of two boys and five girls. At the age of nine his father died and young William began clerking in his uncle's store. When 18 years of age his mother passed away. At the outbreak of the Spanish American War, on being physically rejected from military services, he volunteered to serve as camp cook and followed the third Nebraska regiment to Cuba for the duration of that war. He then went to Walnut, Iowa, and began clerking in a general store.

On January 29, 1902, he was united in marriage to Miss Emma E. Andreson, daughter of pioneer residents of Walnut. To this union were born, 3 boys and 3 girls.

In 1906, with his wife and two small daughters, the family moved to Plainview, Nebraska, where he in partnership with his brother-in-law, H. H. Goos, opened a grocery store under the firm name of "Guthmann and Goos". The business gradually expanded into a general merchandise store. In 1918, Mr. Guthmann bought his partner's interest and continued to operate the business until he sold out in October 1936. Since then he has busied himself in various lines of work and has been employed at Schnert's Bakery for the past few years.

The deceased was a member of the Modern Woodman Lodge and served as a member on the school board. He was a kind father and carried in his heart through the years the "spirit of good will" toward all his fellow men.

Death came unexpectedly from a cerebral hemorrhage which occurred after he had retired for the night. From this stroke he never regained consciousness and passed away at 3 am Tuesday morning.

Preceding him in death was his wife in 1931 and daughter, Pauline in 1928. Surviving are two daughters, Lillian, Mrs. Victor Andersen of Plainview and Cinderetta, Mrs. Robert Luebke of Fremont; three sons, William of Morrisville, Vermont; Harold of Chicago, Ill.; and Everett of Lincoln; thirteen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Anna Goos of Omaha and a brother, Ed of Grand Island.

Funeral services were held at the Congregational church in Plainview this afternoon (Thursday) December 23 and interment made in the Plainview cemetery. [3]
