Biography

Jane Guthrie was born 15 January 1802 in South Carolina.^[1] She married William B. Langdale before 1815. They had a son, John Robert Langdale, in May 1815. William was deceased by 1822. Jane married William's brother, John Curtis Langdale, in the fall of 1822 or 1823 in Colleton County, SC. John was a soldier in the War of 1812. He died 10 December 1846 at Columbia, SC. Jane died on 24 December 1879 in Colleton County, SC.^[1][2][3] She was buried in Ireland Creek Cemetery in Walterboro, Colleton County, SC.^[1] The death year on her grave marker is incorrect, as evidenced by the 1880 U.S. Mortality Schedule and her obituary.^[2][3]

Langdale.—Died, at her residence in Colleton Co., on the 24ult., Mrs. Jane Langdale, in the 78th year of her age. She was a member of the Old Island Creek Methodist Church for sixty years; and during this long period always lived, as it was fitting she should die. When the messenger came, she was found ready; being in possession of all her mental faculties, she recognized the hand of death, and calling the family around her couch, exhorted them all to meet her in heaven. Then, with a shout of "glory!" upon her lips, her life went out.
Note: The "ult" in "24ult." means the 24th of last month, so 24th of December 1879. "In the 78th year of her age" means she was 77 years old.
