He was Bohemian by birth but was born in Russia when his father was sent there to manage the building of a sugar beet refinery. He arrived in New York March 29 1907 at the age of 18. He was supposed to go back after a tour of the US and finish his education. He never went back.

He was an expert engineer and machinist. He was living in San Francisco at 744 Minna St in 1909. He wended his way to Northern California, worked for Gladding McBean in Lincoln and then at a garage in Lincoln. He moved to Roseville in 1920 and opened a Garage and Machine Shop in 1921. He also made one off replacement parts for the PFE after he opened his own machine shop in Roseville in 192_. The 1920 Census shows him rooming at Mrs. Mary Hoke's boarding house. He sent medicine and clothing to his family in Prague during WWI and all through the troubles after. Letters in personal possession of Lyn (Driver) Gulbransen. He married Sarah Jane Rogers Sept 8, 1924, the mother of eight children between the ages of 20 and 6. Together they had two additional daughters. He worked at Mare Island during WWII, earned 4 patents and gave them to the government. He loved America.[1]
LODI ACTING RECORDER SHIES AT OFFICIATING AT WEDDING CEREMONY LODI (San Joaquin Co.), Sept. 15. Inexperience in matrimonial matters was the excuse given by acting City Recorder J. E. Hopkins of this city for referring a would-be bridal couple to Rev. Benjamin Smith of the First Christian Church yesterday. The bridal pair gave their names as Stanley Carl Hakl and Miss Sarah Jane Rogers of Roseville. They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Driver, also of Roseville. The couple were married by Rev. Smith at his home on South School Street at noon and immediately left for their home in Roseville, where the groom is engaged in business. [2]
J. Hawkins & Sons Retaining Dodge Agency And Accessory And Tire Business Joseph Langston, Jr., of this cityand S. C. Hakl of Lincoln, have purchased the garage business which J.Hawkins & Sons have been conducting in connection with their Dodge agency, Messrs Langston and Hak! having taken over the business on Monday of this week. Both members of the new firm are experienced auto mechanics. Mr. Langston, who is well and favorably known in this city, has been employed in Gray's garage for some time and Mr. Hakl has been employed in a garage at Lincoln. Both are enterprising and ambitious young men who will do their utmost to merit the patronage of the motoring public. [3]

S. C. Hakl has purchased the interest of his partner, Joe Langston, Jr.in the Dodge Garage and will conduct the business himself at himself at the same quarters in the Dodge agency building. Mr Hakl has proven himself a first-class, all-around auto mechanic and has won the confidence and sup- port of a considerable number of motorists. [4]
DODGE GARAGE TO BE ENLARGED Construction. Of A Fifty Foot Addition To Be Started Immediately J. Hawkins is advertising for bids for the erection of a 50x50 foot addition to his building on the corner of Vernon and Grant streets. The present building is 50 feet wide and 75 feet long, and the new addition will make it 50x125 feet. The front of the building is occupied by the Hawkins Brothers Dodge agency and the rear, facing on Grant street, by S. C. Hakl's Dodge Service Garage. . . . [5]

S. C. Hakl Dies, Funeral Friday Stanley Carl Hakl of 210 Fern Avenue, died Tuesday at the Rosevilie Hospital. Hakl, a machinist, operated his own machine shop in Rosevilie for 31 years. Prior to coming to Roseville he was employed by the Gladding, McBean pottery in Lincoln where he installed machinery.. During the war he was at Mare Island as a machinist. He is survived by his wife, Sara Jane Hakl of Rosevilie; two daughters, Mrs. Irvin Bohn of Rosevilie and Mrs, E. S. Driver of Sacramento: one step-daughter, Gladys M. Painter of Rosevilie; and six step-sons, N. E. Rogers and LeRoy Rogers of Rosevilie, Wesley Rogers of Concord, Quentin Rogers of Eugene, Ore., Garnett F. Rogers of Santa Rosa, and Major Ellery Rogers of El Paso, Tex. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Larnbcit Funeral Home, with the Rev, Samuel Lentz of the Bethel Lutheran Church officiating. Cremation will follow at East Lawn, Sacramento. Last Rites Held In Roseville For Former Pottery Employee Services were held last Friday at the Lambert funeral home in Roseville for Stanley Carl Hakl, 69, of Roseville who died April 29 in the Roseville District hospital. He owned and operated a machine shop in Roseville for 31 years, and before that he was employed by the Gladding, McBean pottery in Lincoln where he installed machinery. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Jane Hakl of Roseville; two daughters, Mrs. Irvin Bohn of Roseville and Mrs. E. S. Driver of Sacramento; one stepdaughter, Gladys M. Painter of Roseville, and six stepsons, N. E. Rogers and LeRoy Rogers of Roseville, Wesley Rogers of Concord, Quentin Rogers of Eugene, Ore.; Garnett F. Rogers of Santa Rosa, and Major Ellery Rogers of El Paso, Tex. Rev. Samuel Lentz of the Bethel Lutheran church in Roseville conducted the services, which were followed by cremation at East Lawn in Sacramento.[8]
