Thomas was born during 1900[1] in Gateshead to Thomas and Annie Haldane.
He enlisted in the army near the end of WW1. He stated he was an 18 year old unmarried labourer and gave his mother, Annie Carter Haldane, as his next of kin. She was living at 62 Franks Street, Elswick at this time. Thomas also stated that his date of birth was the 20th July 1900[2].
During 1939 Thomas was living at 114 Croydon Road in Newcastle upon Tyne. He was working as a general labourer and his widowed father-in-law, John Thompson, was still working in his trade as a cobbler[4].
His death record gives a date of birth of 28th July 1900[5].
