Mustered out: Mar 6 1865

In the 1850 US Federal Census[1] George Haley is listed in Missouri as a farmer, he is 22 and Abigail is also 22. Margaret J Haley is 3 months old. It also says that neither George or Abigail can read or write.

In the 1870 US Federal Census[2] George Haley is listed in Missouri as a Hotel keeper. He is 43, owns 5k in real estate and 1.5k in personal estate. Abigail is 42, Betty M is 16 and Rutha S is 15. They were all born in Tennessee. They appear to have a few boarders as well, a water/clock dealer, a land agent, a painter and a domestic servant.

Parts of the below story may be a fabrication, as no other ancestors of his grandmother Elizabeth Callahan have similar stories. His descendants also said that his wife, Abigail Haley disliked Native Americans, so it seems odd that she would have married someone with this ancestry. See her profile for more information on statements about her.

In a letter written in 1902, preserved by The Lawrence County Historical Society Bulletin, October 1987,[3] there is a Statement of George Haley, Mount Vernon, Missouri. William Sims, a member of the society, of Walnut Grove, Missouri, recently discovered his neighbor, Mary Courtney (RT. 1, Aldrich MO 65601), was a great-great-grand daughter of George Haley, an old settler at Mt. Vernon. Through her, Mr. Sims obtained some valuable family data, and has provided a copy for the Bulletin. Date 1902. It says - "I, George Haley of Mr. Vernon, Mo., Would state that my grandmother Elizabeth Callahan's maiden name was Elizabeth Rishton and she married John Callahan and to them were born six children, three boys, David, George, and Jack, and three girls, Louvica, Susan, and Sarah. And my father George Haley senior, married Louvica Callahan in Kentucky, and afterwards moved to Tennessee.

I was born in Warren County, Tennessee, on March 10, 1826. My grandfather John Callahan was killed in the battle of Tipacanoe on November 7th, 1811, and when I was a small boy my grandmother Callahan came and visited us, and lived with father and mother for some time, and they told me that she was an Indian and belonged in Alabama, and she made a trip from father's house back to her tribe in Alabama, and afterwards came to Missouri during the time of the removal of the Chickasaw and Choctaw tribes to their present location in the Indian Territory, but she stopped with her daughter, Sarah Cannefax, in Greene County, Missouri, and remained there several years, and then went to Illinois and died there at the age of 95 years. I was married to Abigail Rhea in Cannon County, Tennessee Sept 28 1848, and four daughters were born to us as follows: Josephine, born in Warren County, Tennessee on April 5, 1850. Louvica Azeline, born Warren County, Tennessee, on Feb 11, 1852. Elizabeth M, born in Cannon County, Tennessee, on July 29 1854, and Ruth S born in Warren County, Tennessee on Feb 15 1855.

I moved to Missouri from Tennessee in 1858. My oldest daughter, Josephine, was married to G. R. Cannefax at Mt Vernon, Missouri in Mar 20 1866, and to them were born nine children, six girls and three boys. First, Mattie, who married B. F. Hunter, and had three children (all minors yet). Second, Hattie, who married B. F. Hunter, her sister Mattie's husband, and to them was born one child (a minor yet). Third, Effie, who died at the age of 2 years. Fourth, Loren, who married Miss Clara Biner and they had one child, a minor. Fifth, Carlena, who married Dr. B. F. Lazenby and they have two small girls. Sixth, Clyde, single. Seventh, Naomi, who married Carl A. F. Berger and they have one small child. Eight, Ruthie, who married Bert Herron, no children. Nine, Walter Noble, who is a minor.

My second daughter Louvica Azeline married W. T. Freeman Dec 25 1867 and six children were born to them, three girls and three boys as follows. Maud, who married J. F. Silman and they have five minor children. Lura who was married to James O'Rourke and they have three minor children. Kirk, who was married to Carrie Rupert and died Oct 17 1902, childless. William Homer, single. Ethel Abigail, and she married Scott B Dayton and they have two small children. Nettie Nell, a minor.

My third daughter Elizabeth M married W. H. Cherry and they had nine children born to them, namely, first Thule, who married John Skeane and they have three minor children. Second, George, who died and was not married. Third, James, who is married and has no children. Fourth, Jackson, who married Pearl Snyder but they have no children. Fifth, Nina who married Walker Kirby, but they have no offspring. Sixth, Mollie, a minor. Seventh, Nell, a minor. Eight, Grover Cleveland, a minor. Nine, Jiles, a minor.

My fourth, Ruthie who married James M Rawlings and they have four children. Namely, first, Victor L., who married Myrtle Young and they have no children. George, married Vivian Rose and they have one minor child. Harry, not married. Jen, a minor.

I would further say in regard to my grandmother Callahan that while she was at my father's house in Tennessee, as stated above, that two of her sisters, Rhoda and Vicey and one brother Josh Rishton came from their tribe in Alabama and visited her two or three times. And then their tribe was moving west to their present country when they came by my father's house. My father's house was only one mile from the main trail upon which the main body of those Indians traveled."

His daughter's Eastern Cherokee Applications also confirm that he was their father, his parent's names and their children's names.[4][5][6][7]
