Obituary
Robert Thayer Hambright, age 82, of Farmington passed away at 11:35 a.m. on Monday, July 5, 2004 at his home. He was born Feb. 23, 1922 at Bennett, Iowa, the son of Paul and Edith Tracht Hambright. He married Margaret Forgrave on Aug. 16, 1947 at Ottumwa. He is survived by his wife Margaret of Farmington; two daughters, Edie Hambright of Iowa Falls and Mary Lou (husband Geoffrey) Peterson of Grand Junction, Colo.; three brothers, Rhea (wife Darlene) Hambright, Davenport, Phillip (wife Darlene) Hambright of Bennett, and Rolland (wife Deanna) Hambright of Bennett and one sister-in-law, Winona Hambright of Traer. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, John, and his brother, Dick. Bob joined the Army National Guard at the age of 17. He was inducted into the Army in December of 1940 as a member of Company A 463rd Parachute F.A. 101st Airborne Division. He served in North Africa as part of the Screaming Eagles. He jumped in Sicily and then went to Italy. From Italy to Anzio Beachhead, he fought to Rome, then into the mountains of Italy and back to France. Bob jumped in South France and fought to Belgium and the Battle of the Bulge. He jumped into Germany before the end of the War. He served 4 1/2 years, with three years overseas. His honors include the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, American Defense Ribbon, Bronze Service Medal and others. Bob was a carpenter and manager of the Farmington Creamery. He was a school bus driver for the Harmony School District for 23 years, and assisted at the Hofbauer Funeral Home for many years. He played Santa Claus. He was a licensed lay speaker for the United Methodist Church, serving pulpits in the Farmington United Methodist Church, Bonaparte United Methodist Church, and West Point Presbyterian Church. Bob served two terms as Mayor of Farmington, and served on the Farmington Fire Department. He was a 50 year Mason, and served as Worshipful Master in the Mount Moriah Lodge #27. He was a member of the Farmington American Legion, and played Nathaniel in the Lenten Service of the Lord's Supper. He served on many local and state church boards. Friends may call after 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7 at the Hofbauer-Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Farmington, with the family meeting friends from 6-8 p.m. that evening. There will be a Masonic Service at 7 p.m. by the Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge #27. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Farmington United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Catie Newman and Richard Eis officiating. Burial, with full military rites by the Farmington American Legion, will be held at the Greenglade Cemetery in Farmington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Farmington United Methodist Church, Bonaparte United Church, or the West Point Presbyterian Church. [30]
