William was the third son of William Hamilton and Beatrix Douglas.
He married, firstly, Anne Hamilton, his first cousin and daughter of John Hamilton, in 1660. He married, secondly, Mary Erskine, daughter of Hon. Sir Charles Erskine of Alva, on 31 August 1676.
He was an antiquary. He lived at Wishaw, Scotland. He had eight other sons by his first wife.
All male line descendants of this person will be the same haplogroup.
