James served 4 years during the Civil War. He served in "Hunter's Brigade" and "Pickett's Division" in the famous charge at The Battle of Gettysburg. He was never injured but was captured at Harper's Ferry. He was put in prison at Point Lookout on April 14, 1865 and released June 13, 1865.
