Biography

Joseph was born 19 Aug 1836 in North Hampton, Peoria County, Illinois. He was the son of Reuben Hamlin and Betsy Reed.

In 1850 he was living in Peoria, Peoria, Illinois.^[1] The household included Reuben Hamlin 47, Betsy Hamlin 35, Frances Hamlin 20, Harriet Hamlin 18, William Hamlin 14, Joseph Hamlin 11, Marion Hamlin 1, and Adelaide E Hamlin 2. Betsy, Frances, and Harriet were born in New York; William, Joseph, Marion and Adelaide were born in Illinois; the family apparently moved from New York to Illinois about 1834. Reuben was a carpenter.

Joseph Hamlin and Julia S Saxton were married on 2 January 1859 in Peoria County, Illinois, United States.^[2]

In 1860 he was living in Hallock, Peoria, Illinois.^[3] The household included Joseph Hamlin 21, Julia Hamlin 20, and Luella Hamlin 9 months. Joseph was a farmer. Betsy Hamlin lived next door.

He was a Sergeant in Company C of the 86th Illinois Infantry for the Union in the Civil War, entering the service on 12 Aug 1862 in Chillicothe, Peoria County, Illinois and mustering out 6 Jun 1865 in Washington, DC.^[4]

In 1870 he was living in Long Point, Livingston, Illinois.^[5] The household included Joseph Hamlin 31, Julia Hamlin 31 and Luella Hamlin 11. Joseph was a farmer.

In 1900 he was living in Seward, Nebraska.^[6] The household included Joseph Hamlin 61, wife Julia S Hamlin 61, daughter Luella M Hamlin 41, daughter Lunetta E Hamlin 26, and laborer Thomas Craige 36. Joseph and Julia had been married 41 years. Julia was the mother of 2 children, both living. Joseph was a farmer. Thomas was a farm laborer. Lunetta was a teacher.

He died 13 Oct 1925 in Seward County, Nebraska^[9][10][11] and is buried in Seward Cemetery, Seward, Seward County, Nebraska.^[12]
