Milton was born on 23 Jan 1825 in Savannah, Ashland, Ohio, United States. He was the son of James Haney.[1]
He married Sarah Catherine Huntsinger.[1] before 1850.
When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Milton was a minister.[2]
Milton was a Civil War veteran. He served the Union Army as Regimental Chaplain & Captain, Company F, 55th Regiment, Illinois Infantry.[3] He enlisted at 37 on 11 Oct 1861 for 3 years. He was mustered in on 31 Oct 1861 in Chicago, Illinois. He resigned on 14 Mar 1862 to accept appointment of Chaplain of the 55th Illinois Infantry. He was born in Ohio, was married and a minister by trade. Milton was mustered out 2 Dec 1864 in Springfield, Illinois. Milton was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel but not mustered, so the commission was returned and he was mustered out as Chaplain.[4] His health suffered from his time in the Army and was discharged at the end of 1864.[2]
Milton was awarded the Medal of Honor "for extraordinary heroism on 22 July 1864, in action at Atlanta, Georgia. Chaplain Haney voluntarily carried a musket in the ranks of his regiment and rendered heroic service in retaking the Federal works which had been captured by the enemy." He was one of nine 55th Illinois Infantry soldiers, and one of three Union Army Chaplains to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery.[1] Out of the hundreds of veterans who went to Pasadena, California, United States, only 2 received the Medal of Honor - Milton and Thomas Foulds Ellsworth.[2]
Milton received a Military Pension due to being recognized as an "army invalid" due to war-caused health problems. [5]
He passed away on 20 Jan 1922 in Pasadena, Los Angeles, California, United States and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum in Altadena, California. [1] Milton was buried under a headstone that made no mention of his military service, or of his exceptional bravery.[2]
