Biography

Joseph was born in 1855. He is the son of James Hardy and Rachel Wiggham. [1]

J.G. Hardy obituary from a clipping of a Lockhart newspaper with a hand written date of July 1920:

"After an illness of several weeks J. G Hardy died at his home on Pecos Street about five o’clock Sunday morning July 25th.

The body was buried in Lockhart Cemetery Monday afternoon at half past five o’clock. Services conducted by Rec. Robt. A. McCurdy were held at the grave.

The active pall bearers were A.R. Chew, William Blanks, J.H. Magee, W.M. Holmes, R.R. Blundell, W.H. Lewis; the honorary pall bearers were the members of the Men’s Bible Class of the Christian Church Sunday school, known as the Field Class. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful.

Mr. Hardy was born in Columbia Missouri April 18, 1855. He came to Texas in 1875 and settled near San Marcos where he resided until 1889 when he moved to Lockhart.

He married Miss Florence Vanlandingham who survives him. He [is also] survived by two sons. [Ollie W] Hardy of San Antonio, Dr. A.C. Hardy of Kirksville, Mo and a sister, Mrs. Salie Cook of Columbia, Mo.

Mr. Hardy had been a member of the Lockhart Christian Church for more than thirty years and during all of that time a member of the same Sunday School class. He was also a deacon in the church and a member of the official board.

Mr. Hardy was a man of quiet manner but firm in his convictions. In all matters of division, he was found to occupy the conservative position and used his influence to promote harmony. He was a strong believer in education and culture. In his quiet way, Mr. Hardy has done much for the progress of every worthy cause in Lockhart. He contributed of his means as much as he was able and was generous of his time for every public enterprise.

His life was devoted to his two sons and he was rewarded by seeing them in manhood cultured, highly esteemed and successful men."

Hardy-3994 and Hardy-1446 appear to represent the same person because: They are born the same month and year, with the same parents and siblings, and I have yet to find any other relatives who have two people with the same name for their children, in this case, Joseph and Joseph George. They would also have to be twins to be of the same mom and dad, and you would want to distinguish twins by different not same names. Greg Newman
