Biography

Philip Hardy was born in Amherst, Erie county, NY on 10 Nov 1859. Philip was the child of Henry Hardy and Elizabeth Günther. [1]

In the 1860 US Census, The Hardy family was living in Amherst, Erie county, NY and consisted of parents Henry and Elizabeth with their five children: Eva, Henry, George, Elizabeth and Philip. Their surname was written, "Harty" and transcribed as Hartz."[2]

In the 1865 New York State Census, parents Henry and Elizabeth were living in Amherst, Erie county, NY with their seven children: Eva, Henry, George, Elizabeth, Philip, Magdalena (Lana) and Christiana. [3]

In the 1870 US Census, Henry and Elizabeth Hardy were living on a farm in Amherst, Erie, NY with their 9 children: Eva, Henry, George, Elizabeth, Philip, Magdalena (Lana), Christiana, Michael and Catharine, Their surname was written, "Hartel."[4]

The Hardy family was in the same location for the 1875 New York State Census with parents Henry and Elizabeth and seven of their children: George, Elizabeth, Philip, Magdalena (Lana), Christiana, Michael and Catharine. Also in the home was a nephew to Philip: Henry Becker/Baker, age 6. the census lists the boy as a nephew to Henry but he is the son of Eva Hardy and Christian Baker. The surname is written/transcribed as "Hearly."[5]

In the 1880 US Census, still living in Amherst, Erie county, NY, the Hardy family consisted of: Henry Hardy and Elizabeth with children: Philip, Christiana, Michael and Catharine. [6]

On 28 Apr 1885, Philip married Magdalena Mislin.[7][8]

Philip and Lena had the following children:

  • Baby boy Hardy, born 28 Feb 1886
  • Magdalena Hardy, born 28 Feb 1886
  • Jacob George Hardy, born 14 Mar 1888
  • Philip Joseph Hardy, born 26 May 1891

In the 1892 NY State Census, Philip and Lena were living in Amherst NY with children Lena, Jacob and Philip. They were living next door to Philip's parents, Henry and Elizabeth.[9]

Philip and Lena had three more children:

  • Laura Hardy, born Dec 1893
  • Charles Almer Hardy, born 14 Mar 1896
  • Herman Henry Hardy, born 21 Mar 1898

Philip's mother, Elizabeth, died in April 1898 and his father,Henry Hardy died in May 1900. In the 1900 US Census, Philip and Lena were living in Amherst, Erie county, NY with the following children: Lena, Jacob, Philip, Laura, Charles and Herman. Philip was a farmer. [8]

Philip and Lena had two more children:

  • Walter E Hardy, born 1902
  • Joseph G Hardy, born 1905

In the NY State 1905 Census, Philip and Lena were living again in Amherst, Erie county, NY with their children: Philip, Laura, Charles, Herman, Walter and Joseph.[10]

In the 1910 US Census, the family was living on Sweet Home Road, Amherst and consisted of Philip and Lena with children: Jacob, Philip, Laura, Charles, Herman, Walter and Joseph.[11]

Philip and Lena adopted a daughter:

  • Clara Elsie Hardy, born 5 Sep 1913.

In the 1915 NY State Census, Philip and Lena were living with children Laura, Charles, Herman, Walter, Joseph, (adopted daughter) Clara and also with Lena's mother, Minna (Wilhelmina) Mislin.[12]

In the 1920 US Census, Philip and Lena were living with children: Walter, Joseph, (adopted daughter) Clara, Herman and Charles and again with Lena's mother, Wilhelmina Mislin.[13]

In the 1925 NY State Census[14] and the 1930 US Census[15], Philip and Lena were living with children Joseph, Joseph's wife Frieda and adopted daughter, Clara E.

In the 1940 US Census, Philip and Lena were living with Joseph and Joseph's wife, Frieda.[16]

Philip Hardy died 4 Dec 1946 in Amherst, Erie county, NY. [17] He was buried in Skinnerville Cemetery in the same town.[1]
