Catharine Hardy was born in Erie County, NY in Jan 1870. Catharine was the daughter of Henry Hardy and Elizabeth Günther. [1]
In the 1870 US Census, Catherine's parents, Henry and Elizabeth, were living on a farm in Amherst, Erie, NY with their 9 children: Eva, Henry, George, Elizabeth, Philip, Magdalena (Lana), Christiana, Michael and Catharine. Their surname was written, "Hartel" in the census. [2]
The Hardy family was in the same location for the 1875 New York State Census with parents Henry and Elizabeth and seven of their children: George, Elizabeth, Philip, Magdalena (Lana), Christiana, Michael and Catharine. Also in the home was a nephew to Catharine, Henry Becker/Baker, age 6. the census lists the boy as a nephew to Henry and Elizabeth but he is the son of Eva Hardy and Christian Baker. The surname is written/transcribed as "Hearly."[3]
In the 1880 US Census, still living in Amherst, Erie county, NY, the Hardy family consisted of: Henry and Elizabeth with children: Philip, Christiana, Michael and Catharine. [4]
On 10 Apr 1890, Catharine married John Philip Groll.[5] John Groll is a brother to Dorothea Groll, who married Catharine's brother Michael Hardy.[6] Catharine and John had a son:
In the 1892 NY State Census, Catharine and John were living in Amherst, Erie county, NY with their son, William.[7]
Catharine and John had two more children:
Catharine's mother, Elizabeth, died in April 1898. Her father, Henry, died in May 1900.
In the 1900 US Census[6] and the 1905 NY State Census[8], Catharine and John were living on South Side Kingsley St., Buffalo, Erie, NY with two of their children, William and Alice and a nephew, Henry Baker.
In the 1910 US Census, Catharine and John were living on Winslow Avenue, Buffalo, NY with children William and Alice and a nephew, Eugene Fahning.[9]
In the NY State 1915 Census, Catharine and John were living with daughter Alice and nephew, Eugene Fahning on Morton St. in Buffalo, NY.[10]
In the 1920 US Census, Catharine and John were living on Rutgers Avenue, Buffalo, NY with their son Charles.[11]I'm having problems with Charles. He does not show up in any census until the 1920 US Census. Then he is suddenly there with his parents. Where is he before that? Catharine and John have a nephew living with them in most census', so it is not likely they sent him to live with someone else? In addition, in the 1900 Census, Catharine states she has had three children but only two are alive. I initially thought Charles died as a baby. Maybe he did and the Charles in 1920 is a nephew?
In the 1925 NY State Census, Catharine and John were living in Buffalo with a "roomer" named Esther Groll.[12]
Catharine died 16 Oct 1925 in Buffalo, Erie county, NY. She was buried in Skinnerville Cemetery, Amherst, Erie, NY.[1]
