in the battle fought. Remaining here until May, the corps was marched to Camargo, where Mr. Hargis was honorably discharged, his time having expired. He then returned to Kentucky, where he remained until 1850, in which year he crossed the plains to California, with horse teams, and arrived at Hangtown (now Placerville), El Dorado county, September 12, 1830. He first proceeded to Pedro Bar, Tuolumne county, where he mined until February, 1852; thence to Santa Cruz county, and there farmed until 1853. He then moved to Watsonville, in the same county, where he followed the like occupation for two years. In 1855 he went to Shasta county, and mined on the Trinity river until July, 1858. Next we find him at the Frazer river diggings, but not finding anything there he returned to California, came back to Santa Clara county, and located about a mile south-east of the spot where he now resides. In 1863 he disposed of the farm, and moved to San José, but at the end of eight months, purchased his present property of two hundred and forty acres. Mr. Hargis married, firstly, March 28, 1861, Susan Campbell, who died December 9, 1869; and secondly, May 21, 1871, Libbie Messersmith. He has five children, viz.: Walter L., born June 24, 1869; Jessie U., born June 6, 1873; Fred. S., born February 4, 1875; Frank M., born March 20, 1879; Harry E., born May 12, 1881.

Mr. Desmond Hargis,

Letter from Lionel Desmond Hargis Attorney & Counsellor, Reno, Nevada.

Satine Creek,

Stewart County, Tennessee.

February 1st, 1912.

Dear Kinsman:

I am writing you with the hope that I will get in communication with some member of the family, with the ultimate end of paying a visit to your part of the country and getting acquainted.

Before I was born, which was July 12th, 1875, my father Lionel Desmond Hargis Sr., who died in Ukiah the 25th of April, 1906, was in communication with your father, L. D. Hargis, and who received a letter from your father, dated, Stewart County Tennessee, December 5th 1874, and in which letter your father gave quite an account of different members of the family, and there in stated you were the youngest son, named Desmond, and that you would inherit his present homestead on Satine Creek, Stewart County. He gave your age at eighteen years, which would make you fifty five years of age at the present time providing you were still living. My father came to California with two brothers, Frank and Marion, crossing the Isthmus of Panama in 1854, and lived in California continueusly up to the time of his death. Marion is still living in Ukiah, California, and Uncle Frank is also living in Southern California, the latter being a veteran of the Mixican War, one of the few survivors.

Herod Hargis, the father of my father was the son of John Hargis, your father's uncle. I have two brothers and four sisters living; two of my sisters are married and are living in Manila, Philippine Islands, the younger one being married the 16th of last month. One brother is married, living in South Dakota, and the other and younger brother is living at home in Ukiah, California. My mother is still living at home. The baby of family, now twenty three is visiting in Southern California at the present time.

I went to the Philippines in 1899 and have been practicing law there ever since, but having been in the Orient for so long I needed a change so returned to the United States in August of last year, and located here in October, 1911.

Trusting to have the pleasure of hearing from you and ultimately, meeting you, I am,

Yours very sincerely,

(Signed) Lionel Desmond Hargis.

I am afraid he never will get that much worth out of it. She believes the writing on the Fly-Leaf by John Hargis indicates that the Bible was bought in Caswell Co., N. C. The following records are also in the Bible.

John Hargis - Sally Hargis married 4 Feb. 1895 (In Person Co., NC)

John Hargis born 12 May 1771

Hanna Hargis born 13 Nov. 1795

Jean Hargis born 23 April 1797

Annis Hargis born 8 March 1799

Sally Hargis born 10 June 1776

Other records are of the Thompsons. They do not know how the Hargis - Thompson connection came about.

Pioneer Passes Away. Another old pioneer passed away last Thursday at the State Hospital. Francis M. Hargis, aged 89 years, came to California in 1854 and spent many years working in the mines in this State and Nevada. His funeral took place last Friday from the Cleland undertaking He was an uncle of Oscar Hargis of Ukiah and Mrs. W. P. Fuller of San Francisco. He was never married.

Death

Herod and Elizabeth Hargis are named in Elizabeth's father Tamzor Barton's will in Smith County, Tennessee in 1931. The family moved from Smith County, Tennessee, to Graves County, Kentucky, in about 1833, according to Walter Franklin Hargis. As no further records have been found of Herod and Elizabeth, they presumably died before 1840 in Graves County, Kentucky.
