Biography
Thomas worked at the Essydale Cheese Factory, and had a house close by (near the summit). "THOMAS EDWARD, born 4 December 1882, married Marian Hart, the granddaughter of the Onawe Maori Princess, Te Marino, sister of tangata Hara, a renowned chief. Thomas worke at the Essydale cheese factory situated up the valley towards the Summit Road. They had a house quite close to the summit. They had nine children, one of whom, a son, was drowned. When Marion was expecting one of the children she was unable to get the doctor in time for the birth. Knowing her time was near, she hoped to get to her neighbour's, the Richfields, some distance down the road. However she collapsed beside the macrocarpa hedge. The Richfields promptly came to her aid: small children were ordered indoors - water boiled, linen fund, and before long, a male child safely delivered by the hedge,"
