The vital records prove that Elizabeth Usher, daughter of NH Lt. Gov. John Usher & his 2nd wife Elizabeth Allen, daughter of NH Gov., Samuel Allen, married a Stephen Harris in Boston on April 25, 1728. They had a son also named Stephen, born in Boston on May 15, 1729. Is this the Stephen Harris who married Mary Angier & removed to Fitzwilliam, NH from Framingham, MA in 1771? His gravestone in Fitzwilliam says he was born in 1725 with no specific month & day. If the Stephen Harris on the gravestone in Fitzwilliam was born in 1725 he would have been age 94 when he died vs 90 years old if he was the Stephen born on May 15, 1729 to Stephen Harris & Elizabeth Usher. We know this Stephen was not the son of Stephen Harris and Mary (unknown) of Rowley, MA & Hollis, NH as claimed in many internet genealogies as their son Stephen died in 1756 at age 7.
Stephen Harris Sr. died before Dec 18, 1735 when Elizabeth married Joseph Francis. There is a Stephen Harris listed in the Boston VR's as having died in Boston in 1730. No age given. Is this the husband of Elizabeth Usher & the father of the Stephen who married Mary Angier? More research is needed on all of the above.
The origins of Stephen Harris, husband of Elizabeth Usher, are unknown. Contrary to many internet genealogies, he is not the son of Timothy Harris (1657-1723) & Phebe Pearson (1660-1732) of Rowley, MA as their son Stephen, born in Rowley in 1700, did have a son Stephen but he was born in 1746 and died in 1753 at age 7.
A Stephen Harris married Elizabeth Usher on April 25, 1728 in Boston. They had a son named Stephen, Jr born on May 15, 1729. A Stephen Harris is listed in the Boston vital records as having died there in 1730......both of these Stephens could very well be Stephen Harris, the father of Stephen Harris who removed from Framingham, MA to Fitzwilliam, NH in 1771 and died there in 1819 but that is uncertain. An Elizabeth Harris, daughter of Lt Governor John Usher, married a Joseph Francis in 1735. It could very well be that this Elizabeth Harris is Elizabeth Usher, the 1st wife of Stephen Harris but again this is speculation. Elizabeth Harris Francis, daughter of Lt. Governor John Usher, passed away in Medford, MA in 1786 at age 84. Further research is needed to establish proof of all the above.
The fact that Stephen Harris, Jr. and his wife Mary Angier's first male child was named Joseph, also the name of Stephen, Jr's putative step father, Joseph Frances, who would have raised him from childhood, is further evidence that Stephen Harris, Jr is, in fact, the only son of Stephen Harris, Sr and Elisabeth Usher, Daughter of NH Lt. Governor, John Usher and his 2nd wife Elizabeth Allen. Wills for either Elizabeth Usher-Harris-Frances or Joseph Frances would add further proof to this claim but as yet no evidence of those documents has been found.
