Martha was born June 12, 1788.[1] She was a daughter of Lieutenant James Harrison and Charity (Cowperthwaite) Harrison. Her father had served in the New Jersey Volunteers and had emigrated to Maugerville, New Brunswick Colony as a United Empire Loyalist. His mother, of Quaker upbringing, was the daughter of another loyalist.
Her father passed away in 1806, leaving the family in a somewhat precarious position. Her mother, who would live as a widow for nearly 50 years beyond that, became the family matriarch. Martha, as the eldest daughter, no doubt bore many responsibilities.
She married Thomas Perley on January 2, 1808 in nearby Sheffield, New Brunswick. Thomas was a son of Oliver Perley, an early settler of the area, and Sarah (Palmer) Perley.
Martha passed away on February 25, 1813 in Sunbury, New Brunswick, Canada and was interred at the Sheffield Congregational Cemetery (Now Sheffield United Church Cemetery).[1]
