Biography

Emily Hartley was born in the first quarter of 1870 in Keighley, Yorkshire, England to Martha Hartley.^[1] The identity of her biological father is currently unknown, although Martha later married Joseph Shuttleworth in 1874^[2] and had several children to him. Emily was baptised Emily Hartley Shuttleworth on 3 March 1878 (when she was 7-8 years old), with parents listed as Joseph and Martha.^[3] Emily is also described as Joseph's daughter in his 1929 will,^[4] but neither of these records confirm a true biological connection.

The Shuttleworth family immigrated to New Zealand some time after the 1881 census. Emily married Pringle Archibald Walker at the house of her stepfather, Joseph Shuttleworth, Kaikorai Valley (Dunedin) on 27 January 1893.^[5] They had 4 children:

2. Bertha (Walker) Thompson (abt.1900-1988)
3. Mildred (Walker) Stewart (1906-2004)
4. Frank Walker (1912-1991)

Emily died on 2 December 1967 in Dunedin at the old age of 97. She was buried in the Northern Cemetery.^[6][7]
