Robert John Hartwell was born in 1812 in Bristol, Somerset, England
When Robert was about 21 he married Emma Louisa Sargeant on 19 June 1833 in St Mary, Islington, England.[1]
The couple had one child: Emma Augusta Hartwell before 22 Mar 1835 in St Martin in the Fields, Middlesex, England as she was christened on that date.
Emma must have died before July 1836 as Robert married again in that month.
When Robert was about 24 he married his second wife Mary Ann Allen on 5 July 1836 in St Mary, Lambeth, England.[2][3]
Robert and Mary Ann had a daughter Laura Louisa Hartwell, in about 1837, as she appears in the 1841 Census.
Robert and Mary Ann had a daughter Ellen Matilda Hartwell in Q4 1838 in Lambeth, Surrey [4] Ellen Matilda died in Q1 1939 when she was just a few months old. [5]
Robert and Mary Ann had a son Robert Francis Hartwell in Q1 1840 in Lambeth, Surrey. [6]
In the 1841 census Robert (age about 29) was living in St Paul Covent Garden, Middlesex, England. He was a compositor. He was living with his wife Maryann, aged 25, daughter Louisa, aged 4 and son Robert Hartwell, aged 2. [7]
Robert and Mary Ann had a daughter Marian Frances Hartwell registered as Marian Fanny Hartwell, in Q2 1842 in Lambeth, Surrey [8]
Robert and Mary Ann had a son Frederick Walter Hartwell in Q4 1845 in Lambeth, Surrey [9]
In the 30 Mar 1851 census Robert John Hartwell, aged 49, born in Bristol, Somersetshire, a printer compositor, was living in Southwark Christ Church, Surrey, England. with his second wife Mary Ann (Allen) Hartwell, aged 33, born in Wellington, Somersetshire and his daughter Laura Louisa Hartwell aged 14, a book folder, born in St Martin-In-The-Fields, Middlesex, daughter Fanny Hartwell, aged 9, born in Lambeth, Surrey, son Frederick Walter Hartwell aged 5, born in Lambeth, Surrey. Visitors are Ellen Mahon aged 17, a dressmaker, born in Plymouth, Devonshire, was visiting, other visitors are Ellen's Mother Ellen (Unknown) Mahon, aged 37, born in Plymouth, Devonshire and possible brother or cousin Henry Mahone, aged 19, a tailor's apprentice, born in Ireland. The family also has a servant. [10][11]
Robert started an affair with Ellen Mahon before 1855 as they started having children in about 1855. These children were registered as Hartwell's so they clearly claimed to be married.
Ellen and future husband Robert gave birth to a daughter Kate Catherine Hartwell, in about 1855 in St Pancras, MIddlesex. No sources for the birth have been found, but she is referenced in several Census records.
Registers show that Ellen and her future husband Robert had a daughter Ellen Emily Hartwell in Q1 1856 in St Mary Newington. [12]

Ellen and future husband Robert had a daughter Alice Charlotte Hartwell in Q2 1860 in Lambeth [14]
Where Ellen and the children were living in the 1861 census is not clear.
In the 7 Apr 1861 census Robert a Printer Compositor, aged 49, born in Bristol, Somersetshire, was living in 46, St Georges Road, St George Southwark, Surrey, England. He was living with his second wife Marianne Hartwell, aged 42, born in Wellington, Devon, daughter Emma Augusta Hartwell (1835-1920) from his first marriage, aged 27, born in St Martin in the Fields, Middlesex, daughter (Marian) Frances Hartwell aged 19, a book folder, born in Lambeth, Surrey, son Frederick Walter Hartwell aged 16, a printer's apprentice, born in Lambeth, Surrey, and a servant. [15]
Robert's second wife MaryAnn died in Q4 1862 in Hackney, Middlesex aged 48. [16]
When Robert was about 52 he married Ellen Mahon on 6 March 1864 in St George the Martyr, England. Robert and Ellen were of full age, Robert was a widower, living at 46 St Georges Road, Southwark, his father was a surgeon called Francis Hartwell. Ellen was a spinster, living at 30 Bayham Place, Camden Town, her father also a surgeon is listed as Henry Walsh Mahon. The ceremony was performed by A Tup the curate, and witnessed by William Gel Davis and Edith M W Gray. The Banns had been read on 17, 24 and 31 Jan 1864, [17] [18][19][20][21][22]
Ellen and Robert gave birth to a son Edward Francis Hartwell in Q1 1865 in St George, Southwark. [23]
In the 2 Apr 1871 census Robert Hartwell, aged 56, a newspaper reporter, born in Burton, Somerset, was living at 257, Kennington Road, Lambeth, London, England with his wife Ellen Hartwell aged 36, born in Plymouth, Devonshire, daughter Kate Hartwell, aged 16, a book folder, born in St Pancras, Middlesex, daughter Ellen Hartwell, aged 15, a book folder, born in Walworth, Surrey, son Robert Hartwell, aged 13, a scholar, born in St Pancras, Mddlesex, daughter Alice Hartwell, aged 10, a scholar born in Lambeth, Surrey, and son Edward Hartwell, aged 6, a scholar, born in Southwash, Surrey. [24][25]
Robert John died in Q3 1875 in Lambeth, London, England [26][27] [28]
Robert's Will was granted probate on 10 May 1876 in London. The entry states "HARTWELL, Robert John, The will of Robert John Hartwell, late of 23 Ravensdon Street Kennington Park ROad, in the country of Surrey reporter who died 21 October 1875 at 23 Ravensdon Street was proved at the Principle registry by Ellen Hartwell of 23 Ravensdon Street widow the relict the sole executrix. Effects were under £200. " [29]
