Mary (Hawkes) Boyce came free to the Colony of South Australia (1836-1900)
Mary Tabraham Hawkes was born in about 1838 and was baptised on 6 August 1838 at West Wratting, Cambridgeshire, England[1]. She was the daughter of Christopher Hawkes, a labourer, and Lydia Tabraham.
In the 1841 England Census, Mary Hawkes (aged 2) was recorded living with her father Christopher Hawkes (35 and an Agricultural Labourer), her mother Sarah [sic] Hawkes (30) and her siblings Richard Hawkes (6) and James Hawkes (11 Days) at Witchford, Cambridgeshire.
Mary Hawkes (aged 12) was still recorded living at Witchford, Cambridgeshire in the 1851 England Census. In the household were her father Christopher Hawkes (43 and an Agricultural Horsekeeper), her mother Lydia Hawkes (40) and her siblings Sarah Hawkes (6), Eliza Hawkes (3) and Susanna Hawkes (1).
O 4 October 1852 Mary T. Hawkes (aged 14 and a Nurserymaid) emigrated with her parents and four sisters from England to South Australia aboard the vessel Shackamaxon, departing from Liverpool and arriving on 19 January 1853. She was listed in the "Single women" category[2][3]. An account of the arrival of the ship was printed on page 3 of the South Australian Register (Adelaide, SA : 1839 - 1900) dated Thursday, 20 January 1853, recording that there had been 57 deaths and 19 births[4]. The majority of the deaths were children suffering from Scarlet Fever.
She married William John Boyce on 1 October 1862 at the residence of Rev. J. Gardner in Adelaide[5].
They went on to have about seven children:
