When Harvey Sylvester Haworth was born on September 7, 1856, in Providence, Iowa, his father, Charles Bertram Haworth (1834-1914), was 21 and his mother, Martha Sylvira Reece (1834-1912), was 22. He married Lydia Alice Janeway in 1876. They had five children during their marriage. He died on April 21, 1901, in Waitsburg, Washington, at the age of 44, and was buried there.
