He married Jessie Murray 1850–1937 in Victoria in 1877. [3] Children included:

- William Alexander Hay 1888–1938
he must have commenced a relationship with LIzzie Lott (Smith) Flavin (1881-1954) a married woman somewhere around 1904. Most of his children were born under the surname Flavin (her married surname), but at some point adopted the surname Hay. Their children included:
