Obituary printed on March 21, 1895 in the Mineral Point Weekly Tribune: Another Old Citizen Gone
Amos Hayes died at his home in this city Friday, March 15, 1895. He was born in Harrison County, Ohio, sept 7, 1809 and resided in that state until 1834, when he emigrated to Illinois. Twenty years later, in 1854, he removed to Wisconsin and settled n a farm on Duke's Prairie, town of Mineral Point. In 1858, he sold his farm and returned to Ohio but remained there only five years, returning to Mineral Point in 1873, establishing a residence in this city, and maintained it to his death. He was married in 1832 to Miss Mary Howe, who died in 1859. From this union there were six children, two sons and four daughters. Five of these survive, one daughter having died several years ago.
Mr. Hayes was a fine type of the pioneer settlers of his early manhood, of sturdy, honesty, warm patriotism, dauntless energy, and strong native talents. He served Mineral Point town several years as accessor and as justice of the peace and the city for one ear as accessor. he joined the order of Odd Fellows in Ohio in 1870 and became a member of Mineral Point Lodge by transfer in 1874, continuing his connection therewith till death. He was buried by the order on Sunday, the 17th, in Union Cemetery, town of Willow Springs, beside the remains of this wife.
Amos was born in 1809. He was the son of David Hayes and Mary Horseman. He passed away in 1895.
