My Father, Charles William Heaton, was born on the 9th August 1895 in Dyke Street, Everton, Lancashire, England[1], making him just about a month older than my motherLilian Gertrude Gibson .He attended St. John's Church in Everton where he was a choirboy; in later years he was to develop a fine baritone voice.
He posessed a fine collection of; books including the complete works of William Shakespear as well as on history and philosophy, gramaphone records and pianola rolls: (Many of the books have been passed down to me).
At the age of 15 Charles moved from Everton to Bloomsbury, London, where was apprenticed to his Uncle Harry Smyth (1872 - 1827) as a French Polisher.
Charles enlisted in the army at the start of the Great War.
He joined the , King's Light Shropshire Infantry which he facetiously referred to as The King's Silly Little Idiots. He served in Greece, I have his pay-book showing he was paid in Drachmas. He received a War Pension of 13 Shillings a month, after contracting and suffering from malaria His Pension Record Card
I think he was a highly principled man and a firm Socialist both by nature and politically ; he may also have been at one time a member of The Communist Party. He received the daily paper - The Daily Worker and Russia Today which were the mouthpieces of the party. He was a staunch supporter of National Amalgamated Furnishing Trades Association and became at Branch 54 in Liverpool. He would often leave the family at home whilst he went to his club at the Union's Liverpool Headquaters at low hill, ostensibly on Union business but probably for a few pints of beer.
In 1932 he was involved in a disturbance in Islington Square, Liverpool during a demonstration about the scale of Poor Law Relief - the demonstrators wanted an increase in the sum on offer from the government. Liverpool Echo Report of the disturbance Because of his strong belief in socialism no one would employ him and his family suffered horrendously as a result.. They eventually had to rely on Parish Relief and agin suffered when they were Means Tested
He died of a cereabral haemorrage on 16 May 1963 in Walton Hospital, Liverpool at the age of 67. Death Certificate
