Johannes, usually referred to as Hanß der jungern or der jungsten (the youngest since he was the youngest in his family and also younger than the other Hanß Heinrich living in the same place), was born in 1699 in Oberhoffen-sur-Moder in the Offendorf district in Alsace, France under the family Hanau-Lichtenberg, the sixth-born and son of Theobald Heinrich and Margaretha Jung. At age 22 in 1721, he married Catharina Christmann, the Mayor's daughter, in Oberhoffen. They remained in Oberhoffen where they had seven children together. His wife Catharina died in 1763. Hanß died two days later also in 1763 in Oberhoffen (now under the County Hessen-Darmstadt) and was buried there.
Children:
It is easy to confuse our Hanß with his cousin Hanß Heinrich, son of Hanß's uncle Hanß Heinrich: both were born in the 1690s in the same place, ended up married to a wife named Catharine there in the 1630s, and were referred to as some form of 'younger' Hanß. Our Hanß son of Diebold was referred to as 'Diebold Hanß', 'Hanß Diebold' or 'Hanß der jünger' or 'der jüsten', which described either his being the youngest child in his family or his being younger (born 1699) than his cousin Hanß junior son of Hanß (born 1693). Note that existing Ancestry.com and Geneanet trees mistakenly assume that Catharina Wanner married Hanß son of Diebold, but there is no evidence that the wife of Hanß son of Diebold named Catharina, daughter of Diebolt, Hannsen Diebolt's son, whose surname was Christmann according to her birth record, and who he married in 1721 died before Catharina Wanner's marriage in 1730, prompting him to remarry -- instead Hanß son of Diebold and Catharina née Christmann continued having children together. Hanß son of Hanß, on the other hand, was consistently called 'Hanß jung' or 'der jung', and in one case 'junior', which referred to his having the same name as his father Hanß. One exception is in the 1729 death record for his first wife in which he is named as what looks to be 'Hanß des Mittlere', which may be referring to him as the 'middle' between his father Hanß and his son Hanß (born 1717) - all three were alive at that time. Given the first wife of Hanß son of Hanß, Anna Magaretha, died in 1729, it makes sense that it is Hanß son of Hanß who then married Catharina Wanner in 1730, to be distinguished from the Hanß son of Diebold who was already married to Catharina Christmann. To determine which couple are the parents of children born during the 1630s when there were the two Hanß-Catharina couples in Oberhoffen depends on whether Hanß is referred to as 'der jung' versus 'der junger (or junsten)'. The subsequent relationships between the children (e.g. were their siblings cited in subsequent marriage, death, and birth records?), will need to be reviewed to determine whether these conclusions hold up as the working hypothesis.
Ancestry.com and Geneanet trees cite Johannes's death as 25 Nov 1762. However, the record for the Hanß Heinrich the elder who died on that date indicates he was 69 yrs 1 month old, so born in Oct 1693 when Hanß son of Hanß was born. That record is also signed by Görg Heinrich as his brother; our Johannes did not have a brother by that name. The death record for our Hanß is clearly for 4 Feb 1863.
