Biography

John Farnham Hellier worked as a lime burner in England, but in New Plymouth he worked by contract for the surveyors, at one time measuring potato ground, and drawing rations at the store in part payment[1].

John and his family arrived into New Plymouth on the ship Oriental in 1841 as: John, Elizabeth, Thomas, William, Sarah, Elizabeth, Susan, Ann and John [2].

He died 23 March 1843 in a pit-sawing accident[1]. His find a grave profile and he is reported to be the first person to be buried at the St Marys Churchyard [3].
