MARRIAGE RECORD: D Flinn and C Helmick:[1] MARRIAGE NOTE: consent of marriage given my G W Rexroad.

BACKGROUND INFO:

Caroline is probably the illegitimate child of Obediah Barkley and Margaret Helmick. I received an email from one of the descendents of Obediah dated 1/15/2009 from rubyrose75@aol.com

"Greetings Brian: Yes, we would be cousins of a very distant sort...I wish I had ancestry info on Obediah Barkley, but I haven't found any as of yet...that is not without taking time for full-time research in the archives...

I had the information about your Caroline Helmick, daughter of Obediah and Margaret Helmick...for whatever reason, Obediah was away from his family (my line) and living with Barbara and Margaret Helmick in Pendleton County, WV in the 1850 Census...Barbara was the same age as Obediah and was Margaret's mother...I have information from the death certificate for Obediah that the person giving the information at his time of death was his wife, Nelly Barkley (my line) and her legal name being Ellen (Eleanor)...he died in 1858...not sure what went on during those years except to say there was some back and forth and a child conceived, Caroline Helmick...Which is odd to me, because he already had another daughter named caroline, my gg-grandmother and namesake...

I did find a Jacob Barkley in the 1790 census living in Rockingham County, VA which would have been part of Pendleton at the time,[MY NOTE: PENDLETON COUNTY: was formed from Augusta, Rockingham, and Hardy in 1788] if I am not mistaken...they are adjacent to one another now...right across the border...but their [her misspelling] is such a lack of info in those early census re [regarding] names other than household...it stated "6 white souls" were part of the Jacob Barkley household...Obediah was born about 1790...I never have taken the time to look for a will for Jacob Barkley, it would list heirs...on Obediah's death certificate no parents were listed ...and I have not looked for a marriage certificate for Obediah and Ellen, it might list something re his parents...

Good luck, maybe someday I'll take this further...hope this helps a bit...Caroline

NOTE: the marriage record of David Flinn and Caroline Helmick has been incorrectly transcribed as:

FLINN, E. married 8 Jan 1868 in Pendleton, West Virginia, U.S.A. a groom named Jonas Helmick.

In this case the "Jonas Helmick" is actually the "parent of the bride". The correct transcription for the parent of the bride, with further scrutiny, and other factual documents, should be "MAR HELMICK", which is clearly her mother, MARGARET HELMICK. This is supported by other factual documentation.

A "Jonas" has no relevance to this marriage. The "E" of this record is actually the first initial of the father of the Groom: "EDWARD". SO, IN ANY CASE: Edward Flinn could not possibly marry a Jonas Helmick!
