Biography

Samantha Jane Nancy Humbree was the daughter of Richard Lewis Hembree. Her stepmother was Martha A Risley.

Her name is on all documents with various spellings. Her maiden name is documented as Humbree, Hembree, Henly, Embree and Emory. Her first name is also conflicted. Most documents have her as Samantha Jane, but she is also documented as Nancy Jane.

Her married last name is found spelled Hays and Hayes. Her children adopted both spellings and some are Hays while others are Hayes.

She was the mother of 10 children, 9 of whom were living in 1900. She married James A Hays on 4 January 1872 in Pike County Indiana, after his first wife Sarah died. Samantha was the stepmother of Nancy A. Hays Church.

Cause of death was epithelioma of the cervice. The information on her death certificate is Harvey Hays, Petersburg, Indiana (son) She was buried on May 26, 1923
