Biography
When Esquire James 'E. J.' Henderson was born on June 27, 1839, in Laurens, South Carolina, his father, Nathaniel, was 44 and his mother, Azelia, was 39. He married Abagail 'Abbie' Allison Arnold in 1865 and they had 9 children. He died on May 7, 1932, in South Carolina at the age of 92, and was buried in Anderson, South Carolina.

He enlisted in the Army of the Confederate States of America at Lightwood Knot Springs on August 11, 1861, with the rank of Private in Company C of the 14th South Carolina Infantry. He was promoted to Corporal October 1, 1864. He was captured April 2, 1865, in Southerland, Virginia. He was paroled from Harts Island, New York Harbor, on June 16, 1865. Family history relates it took him six months to walk home to South Carolina after his release. At the time of his enlistment, the service record noted that he was a resident of Lawrence (Laurens) District, South Carolina, and was described as having a fair complexion, black hair, blue eyes, and 5'11" tall.
