By 1788, or at age 25, the same year he and Nancy were m., John was listed in the Fayette County, KY Census Index. He was also on the Tax List of Madison Co. by 1789. (Source; "Colonial America , 1607 - 1789 Census Index, p. 9) John and his wife built a beautiful log cabin on the banks of the Dix River, just south of the DAVIS family in Garrard Co., KY. The place was much later inundated with water when the dam was placed to form Lake Harrison. All their children were born and raised there.
In the 1820's, they moved to TN, and then in 1832 they moved up to Illinois. By then, all nine of their children were grown and gone. They went to Illinois with two sons. However, there was a massacre there, about which they were all warned by Chief Shabonna. John took his wife and all but one child with him to the safety of Ottawa, about 11 miles away, just before the massacre of the DAVIS family at their dam.
John and Nancy then moved back to TN, where they died a couple of years later and were buried in the Sevier Plot, Brownsville Cemetery, Haywood Co., TN. (Sources: Alice Pollock's book about their son, John Hope HENDERSON; Land Records of Garrard Co; "Sauk and Fox Indians and Their Great Chiefs"; Visit the massacre site where there are two monuments and a plaque; "History of LaSalle Co., IL" and "Freedom Township", plus much interchange on the Internet with people on the SINGLETON-L@rootsweb.com, and correspondence with Betty (HENDERSON) BOHRER).
John served in the battle of the Indian Wars at Maumee/Fallen TImbers, in 1794.
