Biography

Hinrich Hennings has roots in the region now known as Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

Hinrich was born in Horst Parish Hennstedt March 1, 1818. He is the son of Antje Lemm. His father's name is not yet confirmed as some records show his name to be Hans. My research seems to show that he was the son of Claus Hennings. In the Church records included with the engagement records for Hinrich Hennings and Gretje Reimers noted in the sources below, is the Baptismal register Hennstedt 1818 No. 13. One of the Godparents was Claus Hennings so perhaps he was a grandfather? More research is need to confirm who the father was.[1]

Hinrich and Gretje (Reimers) Marriage

Hinrich's first wife was Gretje Reimers. They were married May 5, 1849. I found two record sources on the FamilySearch website regarding their marrage, One was filed under Hinrich's name.[2]. The other record was filed under his presumed fathers name and show both his father and mother's maiden name as well as Gretje's father and mother's maiden name.[3]

Hinrich and Gretje had one child together, a daughter named Sophia. I found a baptismal record for a Sophia Marie Hennings for 1850 but cannot confirm it's their Sophia however the year fits the scenario of a marriage that happened in 1849.[4]

Gretje died either during childbirth or shortly after because Hinrich then married Gretje's younger sister Wiebke Reimers. I have not been able to locate the source for Wiebke's birth or her marriage to Hinrich yet.

Hinrich and Wiebke (Reimers) Marriage

Hinrich and Wiebke Reimers Hennings

Hinrich and Wiebke Reimers Hennings had the following children together:

  • Margretha (Greta) Hennings (married August Johann [John] Eichmeier)
  • twin Henry (married Berntje Blanche Balster and had a daughter named Bertha who may have lived with the Schulers after her mother died)
  • twin Anna Hennings (married John Schuler),
  • Mary (Marie/Maria) Hennings (married Anton[e] Winterland),
  • Antje Hennings (married Heinrich Detlaf Rohde, Sr.).

In the 1870s, Hinrich and Wiebke's son, Henry Jr. (and his son Detlaf?), daughters Anna Hennings Schuler, and Marie Hennings Winterland all came to Illinois from Germany to settle.

On Mar 2, 1883, Hinrich and Weibke' ame with their daughter Margretha Hennings and husband August John Eichmeier with son August Henry to America. They sailed on the ship Vandalia from Germany. Hinrich was 65 years old and Wiebke was 52 years old. [5][6] They all went to Illinois where the elder Hennings made their home. After about a year, August and Margretha moved to Nebraska.

About 1894, Hinrich's daughter, Sophie Hennings Steen with husband and family, came to Nebraska from Germany and made their home in Ithaca.

Hinrich daughter Antje Hennings Rohde and husband Heinrich Rohde Sr, came with their family from Germany and settled in Yutan, Nebraska in 1911.

In 1888 Henry Hennings Jr. had lived in Saunders County, Nebraska. His parents, Henry and Wiebke had come from Illinois to visit. The two men went to Wahoo the day of The Great Blizzard of 1888. Trying to get back home, they saw a light and spent the night at that house. The story goes that it was so cold they had to keep all of their clothes on and walk around in the houise to keep warm.

According to family legend, Hinrich and Wiebke made their living in Horst, Germany "fishing and keeping the levee in repair". They had a big garden. Milton Eichmeier remembers his grandmother (Margretha Hennings Eichmeier) telling about when she milked cows for the Rohde's who were of wealth.

It is not yet known where either Hinrich or Wiebke died and are buried. It could be in Illinois as there is some evidence they didn't move from there. Their daughter and son-in-law, Anton and Maria Winterland died in Chenoa, McLean County, Illinois.
