Biography

Marshall was born 28 May 1920 in New York City. He was the son of Alta Lake (1889-1990) of Nebraska and Harold Allen Herrick (1880-1977) of New York. His parents were married in Houston, Texas, in 1916 at Alta's Aunt Retta's house. His nickname was Mike and he grew up with his sister Joan and his brother Peter in New York State. In 1930 his family lived in Scarsdale of Westchester county, NY[1] and also in 1940.[2]

He married Edna Ridges in 1939 in Salt Lake City, according to her obituary on her burial memorial and also on his burial memorial, copied below, but this is in error. A 9 March 1943 Utah marriage record needs to be copied from Ancestry.com.

Mike enlisted on 02 Mar 1942 at Chanute Field, Illinois, United States.[3] According to that record, Mike's civilian occupation was an actor and his marital status was single, without dependents. His service was in the Army Air Corps, he was assigned to the 96th Bomber Group, his rank was 2nd Lieutenant and his assignment was bombardier. On or about 29 March 1943 his plane was shot down over the North Sea.[4] His burial was in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Arlington county, Virginia.[4] His first cousin, Wallace Wayne Lake, was a pilot in the Army Air Corps and shot down over China on 7 October 1944. Their grandmother, Mary McConnelogue Lake, grieved the loss of these two grandsons.

Copied from burial memorial:
2nd Lt. Marshall Herrick was born: 28 May, 1920 New York to Lt. Col Harold Allen & Alta Lake Herrick. Marshall (Mike) Herrick was married to Edna Ridges of Salt Lake City, Utah in 1939 [Marriage Record 9 March 1943]. He was inducted into the Army Air Corps in December, 1941, called to duty March, 1942 and reported missing in action 29 July, 1943/ Killed in European area (W.R. 11-30-43) Reported 12-7-43. We could only find one WT profile of the fathers of Marshall's nine crewmates. Stephen William Kettrick's father, Ernest Frederick Hettrick (1886-1970), has no profiles for his two wives. No mothers found.

In the three months since posting the above comment, a few new profiles have been created to connect these crewmen to the shared tree here on WT. While work is proceeding to write the stories of another two dozen B-17 crewmen in the 96th bomber squadron, who all died on 28 July 1943 and to be posted on Fold3, no plans are being made to create WT profiles because of the extra work involved. Work is being done on FamilySearch.org profiles as necessary for biographical story content, so using that information, along with the Fold3 story would be available at some future date to create WT profiles. Creating new WT profiles would be worthwhile as a comprehensive collection of information from the many other scattered and fragmented locations on the internet.
